First, the doors were supposed to open at 8. They opened at 8:30. Which wouldn't have been a big deal if Mr. Sunshine who was putting arm bands on everyone would've stepped it up a bit and, y'know, maybe smiled a little. He was an ass.
The Big Creak started around 8:45-ish. Not bad, but didn't wow me. I'd check 'em out again if they were opening for someone I knew. They finished around 9:30.
Dada came on about 10:15 and played a pretty kickin' set. Now here's where The Factory REALLY rubbed me the wrong way.
By about 11:15, you could see two people conversing with whom I suppose was dada's stage manager. They pointed a lot and had that look like, "We need to get these guys off the stage." At 11:30, dada was done. Apparently there was some DJ from England scheduled to do his thing after dada. All in all, the guys played 14 songs, but it seemed like they were more than willing to keep on going.
Sorry, but this was just a tad bittersweet for me. Sure, they played 14 tunes and sounded like they hadn't lost a step, but to wait five years, pay 40 bucks for two tickets and drive two hours to see them, I was more than a little pissed that they were forced off the stage for a frickin' DJ that I had no idea was even playing until I got there. Had I known this would happen (there was NO indication anywhere that someone was "playing" after dada until you got to the front door - not to mention there was NO indication that they had a "curfew" of 11:30), I may have opted to wait and see them somewhere else. A guy I met saw them in Chicago the night before and said they played for close to two hours. Bittersweet indeed.
I considered asking the show's promoter for a portion of my cash back, but I may just chalk this up as a lesson learned about The Factory. Maybe if the boys came to Cincinnati, it'd make me feel better.
Anyway, met a few people from these message boards and had a good time overall, so don't think I have nothing positive to add. The sound was great, the set list didn't suck (but then, how could it?) and the crowd was definitely feelin' the dada love.
Here's the set list in no particular order (except for the first and last songs):
Dim
Playboy In Outerspace
Surround
Dizz Knee Land
Moon
Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
Posters (a very shortened version)
Bob the Drummer
A Trip With My Dad
Feet To the Sun
Ask the Dust
Heaven and Nowhere
Feel Me Don't You
Dorina
Just about one hour and fifteen minutes on the dot.

I thought the Big Creak were very good, solid for a Cols. band and they snuck in the intro to "Dorina" mid-song, which took chutzpah. Their guitarist was pretty good for a kid.
Dada's set was tight and sounded great, even without Gig doing the 2nd guitar work. Not having 2 guitars does limit some of their set, but what they played sounded fantastic. Too bad they had to quit, and for a f****** DJ no less! ARGH!
Ah well, better than no Dada at all.

I think that the point has been made about the set being cut short and the shortcomings of the venue, so I won't dwell on those.......
As for the show.......the boys took the stage to a roaring crowd who never let up during the entire show. I was in the front row/center and the crowd outsang the band on a few occasions. The boys were having a great time and it showed. Phil and Mike were absolutely amazing, as I have come to expect. However, the man who really shined was Joie, in my opinion. When the band walked onstage, Joie walked over to his amp, grabbed a hand stamper and started stamping the hands of the people who stood directly in front of him as if to claim "joie's bar is open"! After about 5 songs, he whipped out some cups and poured 4 or 5 beers which he then served to the patrons in the front rows! Later in the set, he managed to step down from the stage and rock out with those of us in the audience, all while performing his jam on "feel me, don't you" ( think this was the tune, I was a bit distracted with the man rocking out with me, shoulder to shoulder) I had an amazing, memorable experience. God, I can't wait for the new material to be released. Please, Please go and see this band if you can. Even if the venue doesn't deliver, the band certainly will!

Also, you were front row center? Weird, that's where I was! Well, until the whistle-happy guy came along; he stepped directly in front of me and my lady (who was decked out in red and black). Hope that wasn't you.

You are correct, Percy. I must've been thinking about the CD101 show, which I listened to on the net before I left to come up.

No, bro, that wasn't me.....I remember the dude you are talking about.......
I was the guy with the long blonde ponytail, sporting my vintage denim jacket.... standing behind the two redheads
your section was rocking out the whole time! Are you gonna make it to the Cleveland show when it is booked? I'll buy you a beer if we both make it. Glad you had a great time.......

I might be a bit hesitant to trudge up to Cleveland, but we'll see. Depends on when and how much. I don't have any writing gigs coming up and thus, no mad money for the immediate future. Gotta tighten that belt a bit until I can nab some more work.

So, as a fan from Cincy who was glad to make the trip, PLEASE come to our town!! And DON'T play at Bogart's!! They're as clueless as the Factory clan, if not MORE so! Look into the Southgate House in Newport, KY (just across the river). Hell, I'd even settle for the Blue Note in Price Hill again! Just give Cincy another show!! SOON!!

I was right in front of you to the left with my wife, who was literally dead center, front row. She had to get out of Joie's way when he went on "walkabout" I was right next to the redheads. I couldn't have had better seats.

Enough has been said about the sorry job the management of The Factory performed regarding the dada show. I hope some of those lame-brains read/hear about the comments made regarding their botched job resulting in p*ssing off so many of us fans.

YES!!!! The Southgate House is a wonderful venue. Nada Surf just played there........it would be a perfect place to showcase the talent of DADA!!!!
The masses should rise and convince the booking agent to see what they can do to get DADA a show there....,.

In downtown Cincinnati, the Cavern is a bit smaller, but another room that sounds great. http://thecaverncincinnati.com
The staff and atmosphere in both venues is top notch and I'd suspect a show at either would go off without a hitch. So, how would one go about forwarding this info on to the Powers That Be, so we can make a dada show here happen?

The one with the short dark hair, kinda on the shorter side? We were directly to her left. Sounds like we were all right there and had no idea who was who.

Scott, you seem to be sufficiently recovered from Saturday night. Why don't you start a new topic along the lines of: please, please, please, PLEASE come back to the Cinci/tri-state area? Having seen them at Bogarts and The Blue Note, everyone knows I'd opt for The Blue Note again, but the venues you mentioned sound great. Let's see how much support we can gather for a Cincinnati show (again: on a NEW topic). I'd start it--but I'm shy.

My brother came all the way up from N. Carlolina for just a weekend round tripper to see them and dragged me along. I found the same issues (doors opened late, 1st band was already cranking out tunes, and DaDa cut short), but we stuck around afterwards and ended up meeting both Micheal and Phillip upstairs (this was our first trip to the Factory too) and managed to get my brother's "puzzle" tee shirt signed by all three members. I live in Dayton, so I'll be on the look out for DaDa to come to this neck of the woods (Cincy, Dayton...or Indy). By the way, my brother and I were probably the two oldest guys there, but we're a couple of o old time "garage band" members from the 60s and that's why I like DaDa...they rock like we did once upon a time...
oh, I was in the middle too about 3 rows from the stage before DaDa...we didn't move from our spot and ended up in the tenth row....I had the "Taboo" skelton shirt on with the grey hair!

That was her! I was right behind her. That's funny, all of us rubbing elbows unaware of each other! Whew, I'm just glad you weren't the whistle guy!

On the one song Feel me. Feel me Feel me, don't you xucking touch me...... Joie backed out hunkered over his bass and the crowd parted like water, as I could have reached out and touched him, but the song said don't you xuckking touch me, and no one did....that I'd knew of.. Really cool.
After the show I went up in the loft area where their room was and asked some guy if they would sign my shirt. He took it in the back and brought it back out with all their names on it. Mike said " u go dada dude" , Phil signed my name Keith .. shoot I can't remember but it was good, and Joie just made the moon sun face emblem from AF and signed his name. PRICELESS.
Phil came walking out and the guy that took my shirt in introduced him to me as the guy from NC that came up to see them. I'm sure these guys get this all the time, and of course I said the typical things, he's got to be the best drummer around, did he auction off his Pearl set - he now played Yamaha drums, black. I asked about their next CD and he said hopefully this summer and they are trying to get that done, and yes they were recordings from the prior recording sessions of DADA/mca sessions. Once I told him I received John Treffieisn's e-mails he said .. "oh then your pretty much are updated, and he seemed to want to move on to the next couple guys that wanted to talk to him...
I was told at this point the band won't be coming out into this area, but they will be out front.. I wasn't sure where out front was and decided I'd head out, and really wished I could've or waited to talk to Mike and Joie... oh well still was a great night. After I got home to NC and laid there in the middle of the nite, picked up that bed-side nylon string guitar and started playing my songs with a little bit of dada influence trying to create as they do... you know that was a shot in the arm for me... creatively
- Thanks Dada for getting back to ground Zero- Dada Dude

Hey JCMS....yeah, I saw you there with your camera. I really want to see the pic when Joie came out and stood on top of the speaker and jammed directly above you. It's funny cause I watched you take the picture and I remember thinking to myself " I would love to see how that one turns out!" It looks like I might get to after all! Right on!

(1) Who owns the rights to the IRS era stuff. It would be great to be able to help them set up a way to independantly re-issue them. Their tunes should never be out-of-print. ie: El-Sub was awesome, but IRS died on it's release and it really had no backing.
(2) Phil - what's it like working with Blue Man Group and Uberschall?
(3) Michael - I hope your tendonitis and/or carpal tunnel eases up. Also the Butterfly Jones cd was awesome. (Moon River on the solo cd too
(4) Joie - the 3 Candy Apple Black tunes at mp3.com are permanently on my sysadmin computer playlist.
(5) Dada - How was the Glenlivet?

Much has been written about how The Factory screwed the band and their fans. Earlier fellow fans expressed this shorter and sweeter than I can. As for me, I’ve written directly to the venue to voice my displeasure. They know not to expect me or my cash again. Too bad, too—Chris Whitley’s coming soon.
We arrived at 9:00 and enjoyed most of Columbus’ The Big Creak. Kudos again to them on the Dorina nod. We’ll see them again (maybe Comfest?).
We found Laura and Joe along with Wes right where she said she’d be (in the Joie spot), and the excitement continued to build. Then dada took the stage and the crowd willingly went along for the ride. Mike in his funked-up cowboy hat (wow … if that hat could tell its tale), and Joie sporting a Devo-inspired red chapeaux and carrying a bucket of imported beer on ice, and ever-the-gentleman, Phil, in a white tuxedo shirt. Phil is so suave. I wish I'd been the blonde who was permitted past security to walk right over to Phil at his set and plant an adoring, long kiss and hug right on him. Lucky blonde. I was mindful of the security seated on the stairs stage front and center. At the beginning of the show, you could tell his attitude was “Okay. I don’t know these guys. It’s a job. Let’s get it over with.” Several songs later, his head is bobbing. Several songs later, he’s really grooving and enjoying and watching dada more than us. I’m sure they gained another new fan in that guy.
The show was completely excellent if not flawless. Each song flowed seamlessly into the next. Everyone knew all the words to all the songs, so it was one huge sing-along. It’s always a joy to watch Michael’s facial expressions as he plays. It’s as if they help to guide his fingers along. Sweet. Joie tagged a lucky few of us with his stamp. I was among the fortunate. Several times he stood on an amp in front of us, so we’re looking straight up at this larger than life character. And we enjoyed what Michael termed “the camel walk” where Joie glides gently backwards through the crowd and they just magically part so as not to impede his progress in any way. Super sweet. And what can be said about Phil except that there is never enough said about Phil. He is magic. His style makes it look as though he plays with absolutely no effort. He is so smooth and effective at keeping the pace for the Michael and Joie show. Simply super sweet.
Most of you reading this have been to one or more dada shows before, so I can’t really tell you anything you don’t already know except that after the hiatus, dada seems to perform their live show even better than ever before. Impossible? Yeah, I know … but just wait until your turn and see if you don’t agree. This was their third night in a row, and I know they were tired. But they played like there was no tomorrow and like Columbus was their home town.
And this writer could not love them more. Thanks guys!
