Howdy Lance (and all dadaphiles):

In a word - the show at the Marquee Theatre (Tempe, AZ) - was awesome!!!

First the bad news:
The evening was a freakin' band assembly-line. Three groups played before dada. Two too many. And the turnout was somewhat meager. The venue holds 1,000. I would estimate that 150 - 200 were in attendance.

Now - more importantly - the good news: :D
The guys made the wait worthwhile, in a big way! And played as if it were a full house.

They roared on stage at 11:00P and burst into DIM, Joie adorned with a long, orange wig; Michael and Phil in typical hat and glasses, respectively.

The energy was infectious. How Joie's head stayed attached to his body is still a mystery. He had the energy of five train wrecks, yet sang like a bird. Michael's riffs were strong, bold strokes on a six-string canvas. He played over our heads (literally and figuratively) as we were right in front of him hugging the stage. Phil's chops were right on - groovin' and powerful.

Although it is not my favorite dada song, I would have to give DIZZ the nod as song of the show. Wow! They brought the regular set to an absolutely blazing finish with a stellar rendition of the crowdpleasing PUZZLE fave.

I was unable to get my hands on a physical set list, but my mental notebook yields the following:
dim
playboy
surround
trip
feet
ht,gt
sick
heaven
ask
info
feel me
moon
posters
dizz

ENCORE:
bob
baby
ca dreamin'
dorina

(if anyone can correct me, please do so!)

So, pretty much the same show they have been playing so far this year. Joie did not have ca dreamin' on his list so there was a brief pause after baby. He asked the audience if they should play ca dreamin'. What do you think the answer was?! AZ just wanted more dada! Any song would have been allright! I was afraid that the poor audience turnout would be a real damper, but they tore down the house. Furthermore, the guys said they were sorry to be away so long and would come back soon. A new album in 2003 with a tour to support it would be well received in AZ! Let's do it, boys!

On a personal note ... I was duped out of getting any pictures. The venue had signs up saying NO CAMERAS and they were searching people at the door when we went in. So, chicken that I am, and not wanting my digital camera confiscated, I retreated to my car to put it away. Of course, during the show, out came the cameras. So I know people out there have pix. Let's see 'em!

I hope this wordy review will satisfy your current jones. Now for some Butterfly Jones ...

all in all, not a bad show whatsoever.
the guys managed to impress yet
another music vet in the crowd.
getting older and cutting your
hair gives many much privacy, not
to mention staying cool in that heat.

surround was good and Joie was going-off as usual.:D
The nice right-hand break shows are coming-up, then
NorVA for some low-sands.:(:P
...that was for you Billiam.

Setlist was the same as I had seen listed here for other shows. Mike was awesome on guitar. Dude seems to really feel the music while he's playing. Seems like it comes so naturally to him, kinda like walking or breathing for the rest of us. Joey did bring the energy, but sorry Joe, gotta drop those braids! What happened to Mike's bro?, think he was the 3rd guitarist last tour. Phil seemed like he wanted to get the hell out of there, though it didnt affect his preformance. I really like opening band #3 - Trailer Park Pam, but those guys had to be strung out on sumtin. Cool songs but man they looked run down. Guitarist had a rubber band around his head, whats up with dat? All in all a pretty good show. I really enjoyed it except for those goofs in the crowd doing constant air guitar near the front right.:D

Oh yeah. I also was a lil dissapointed in my favorite Dada tune, Info Undertow. I'm not sure what I expected, but the guys just kinda rolled into it, no real intro. Seemed like it was just kinda knocked out. Guess I had too much anticipation.
What is the deal with the special Dada guitar that for pulled out for one song only. I think it was moon. Mike used the slide on it too. what was the deal with that alt guitar? Was it tuned differently?
