THE PATIO: well?....

I don't have a copy of the set list, so I'm sure this isn't 100% accurate. I'm struggling with the order of the tunes in the middle...
Dim
Playboy
Surround
A Trip With My Dad (an extended version while they replaced Joie's amp mid-song)
Feet to the Sun
Timothy! (they were working on Joie's rig, so Mike was trying to buy some time. They fumbled with the words a few times, but it was pretty cool anyway. Mike said they han't played it in 11 years)
Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
Sick In Santorini
Gogo
Heaven And Nowhere
Ask The Dust
Mary Sunshine Rain
Feel Me Don't You
Moon
Posters (very short...)
Dizz Knee Land
Encore
Bob The Drummer
Baby Really Loves Me
Dorina
As a guitarist, one of the things that flipped me out, was that Mike broke a string on his 'standard tuning' strat at the beginning of Posters(?), and then grabbed his other strat, which was in open tuning, and proceeded to retune it - by ear - while singing the first verse. Maybe took him 20 seconds...
Overall I thought the show was great, although I'm not expecting a return visit to Indy anytime soon based on the turnout. I had a feeling it would only draw the hardcores and the curious.

My comprehensive report follows. Grab a cup of coffee and a snacky cake, as I'm a seriously long-winded bastard. If you want the short version, scroll down and read the last sentence.
Well, let me tell ya, folks, this show more than made up for the short set in Columbus a few months back. Despite some technical problems with Joie's bass rig, the show went off without a hitch. Not to mention a couple surprises added in.
The set list:
Dim
Playboy In Outerspace
Gogo
Trip With My Dad/Spirit of 2009
Surround
Timothy
Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
Sick In Santorini
Heaven and Nowhere
Ask the Dust
Mary Sunshine Rain
Feel Me Don't You
Moon
Posters
Dizz Knee Land
Bob the Drummer
Baby Really Loves Me
Dorina
Yeah, you read me right, Timothy. The aforementioned technical difficulties resulted in Joie putting down his bass during most of Trip With My Dad while a few people scrambled to fix his rig. Eventually, the bassist from the opening band, Pale, brought his amp back on stage and lent it to Joie until his could be fixed. I have to assume he blew a tube in his rig and they were letting it cool down after replacing it.
Anyway, Phil broke it down a bit during the middle of Trip and Michael started to play an impromptu version of Spirit of 2009 and Joie joined him on vocals. Very cool version of the song. The difficulties continued for a bit and the boys started asking for requests. Despite my constant pleas for Pretty Girls Make Graves, they launched into Timothy. It's clearly been a while since they played it, as they forgot some of the words and had to take cues from the audience, but it was a very fun version of the tune. Michael mentioned it's been 11 years since they've played it. Damn. The only minor disappointment was that they cut Feet To the Sun from the set since they ran a little long trying to get Joie's rig in order. No biggie, though.
They finally got things together with Joie's rig and just completely blazed through the rest of the set. Frickin' awesome. The Patio is a relatively small venue, so it was very intimate, with the guys right in your face.
Hung out the entire night with my buddy from Cincy, Jeff, as well as Laura K., Joe, Wes, Dave (I owe you massive beers, my friend), Marty, Kiki and her man, and a few people whose names I didn't catch. I'm not what you would call an autograph hound, because well, I just don't care about a piece of paper signed by someone famous, BUT, I nabbed a set list and had the boys personalize it after the show. Also got a pick from Michael and a very cool magnet created by Laura K. I'll scan the signed set list when I get a chance and post it here.
Speaking of Laura K., she has the distinction of being recognized on stage by Joie, who dedicated Dorina to her, for her amazing efforts in promoting the band. Pretty cool, if you ask me. Oh, I also stole her camera for a bit and despite the supposed no camera rule, snapped a ton of pics from great angles. Hopefully, they turn out pretty good and she'll be able to post them.
Finally, to clarify something that's been bugging all of us for some time now. In Moon, Joie doesn't remember exactly what he says during that one line, but when I sang to him, "You lost this one now, girl", he said he believes that was it. Said he'll have to check, but that sounds right. Not a 100% clarification, but it's close enough for me. Oh, and yes, there is a bit of switching up of the vocals in Gogo in the spots that we've all mentioned in different posts. So, there ya go.
Nutshell: awesome night. Good opening band, great set from dada, sound was good, mood was jovial, a few surprises thrown in, and all in attendance seemed to have a great time. Can't ask for much more. I really hope someone was taping this thing.

Maybe if people at all the shows request Timothy they'll just add it to the set list and I'll be in heaven!

Ok, I’ll say it over and over again until I can’t talk anymore (lol then I’ll just use my hands lol) but, dada is the grandest band EVER! What other band do you know of that would deal with technical problems as well as they do! Ok, ya know what I really think? I think dada put out so much power in their performance last night! Gremlins? No way! I think power~surge is more like it! The energy floating around in the room was incredible! The band played...

The boys did a wonderful job! The boyz truly belong on stage! I have seen bands panic, get pissed and then end up sending some very unhappy vibes to the crowd, or even loose interest in the show. 'Cuz it's just Indiana (actually heard a national act say that before eeeeeek!) BUT I have NEVER seen any band take things as they happen and then move the moment right on the way that dada does!
Some people just have a gift. Very rarely do you find three people who have a musical gift. Even more rare than that~ you find three boyz who have a musical gift and are in the same freakin' room playing together! I've never seen anything like it.
Let's get back to the story~
Timothy! They freakin' played Timothy and 2009! ha ha ha!
I had an awesome time! I really did! I love the dada friends that I've met at shows and on the board! You really reinforce the music at the shows! It’s so kewl to see so many eager fans focusing on dada music! It was great meeting Marty, Chris, Dave, Scott’s buddy, and everyone else that I met last night! You are way fun!
Kiki and beau I snagged myself some dadagarb! Oh yeah! You gotta check out all the kewl stuff that they’ve got out now! I handed over ninety bucks! (No worries, the swag isn’t expensive…You can snag an awesome b&w glossy of the guys for like five clams! Orange fishin’ hats! Oh yeah! Totally the bomb! I had to grab what I could for gifts and made sure to pick up a warm dada embroidered black hooded sweatshirt! I am ready for Fall NOW! Ha ha! Grabbed the jazz cd… I LOVE IT! Wow! Can’t wait for the new cd’s to come out and be available for the upcoming shows! I bet you guys on the East Coast will be the first ones to buy it at the shows
Wait I drifted again… lemme start this engine back up with some coffee and finish my story! ha ha ha…

The show was awesome! The songs right-on! Mike has the kewlest petals I have ever seen! Ernie Ball?
Whoa! The Drums- tight! (I looked for them after the show... but I couldn't find phil's other arms. where does phil put his other 6 arms when he gets done playing? Guitar- ok, the boy is always right-on but two very important points... ! Who the hell else can make playing the strings above the nut sound good???? Holy sch'moly! 2. The man and ax are one in the same! The boy tuned his guitar while he was playing! Oh, no! we're not talkin' adjusted his strings. As in, I'm a little flat I'll turn it a little... NO WAY! I'm talkin' up .. or down steps! I had to pick my jaw off of the ground! damn!
Bass- it sounded killer-kewl (Ya know Andy –very kind bsplyer from pale- went home last night and was thinkin' "how come I can't sound that good in my amp when I play?! ha!" ) All those bands that have bass players that play 5,6, or 7 strings don't even come close to producing the same quality through technique! They can try but They can't even come close to that joie sound!
So, as much as I love the song Dorina, I never like to hear it @ the concerts... because that means one thing and one thing alone... the last song
So here’s a story for ya!…I'm chompin' on the ice left over from my water and I think I hear Phil saying, "we've got a lot of people working for us who are here tonight" I thought, huh? no way! did he really say that? I looked over @ joe and then to kiki, matt, wes, and scott and they're like goin' wild!

I just was so blown away that phil said that! Totally unexpected. (I meant to thank Phil later for saying that but it slipped my mind. Or it might have been my mind that had left my head again! Lol ) The best drummer in the world plugged the website AND the street team! So anyway, there I was, chompin' on my ice again (all I could really hear was the ice that I was chewing and screams from the crowd) and joie says somethin' into the mic. I honestly couldn't hear it. The Next thing I know, I've got like 10 fingers pointing at me and shouting "here, she's right here" I was so totally clueless. Then joe leaned over and told me that joie had mentioned my name. WHOA! I’m sure dada would have said every street team member’s name~ who was at the show~ if they would’ve had time. That’s how much the boyz really appreciate the fan’s support! The fact that they let us help out just blows me away!
I talked to this chick later who was so blown away that all she could say was, "wow!, man, Wow! Gosh, gezzzz wow!"
I know how she feels
Thank you dada! Thanks for coming to Indy and for being the most fun! Rawk-on!
I think that’s gonna have to do it for now! Look Ma! No Edit Stamp!

Hey Kiki! Can't wait 'til Friday when we collect on our lotto ticket! ha! Cross your finger's ya'll! lol OH and Dave, Columbus IS closer! I always confuse Columbus and Cleveland. lol
Libey! You so Rawk!
and don't even get me started on the joie hug. OMG! I'll just say that I needed to take the day off! lol
Phil said that even he pokes around on the messageboard from time to time and reads up on what's goin' on. You have got to love that!!!!
Seemed like the magnets worked since we couldn't have the stickers! ha haha! Thank you thank you thank you!

As far as improvising, these guys are the best. Reading your tale reminded me of when I saw BFJ at the Polar Plunge. Mike's pedal board went out right in the middle of a song but everyone just sort of kept jammin' and Mike started ad libbing on the mike and the next thing you know they are playing 'Aint No Sunshine When She Gone'. At one point Mike was singing 'Baby...Baby...Baby' and this girl jumped up on stage in a diaper and started dancing around. These guys definitely know how to go with the flow and just let the music happen.
Reading these reviews really gets me psyched for the Asbury Park and Baltimore shows. I got my tix in the mail last week. WooHoo.

When my baby jumped up on stage"
Mike Gurley (February 2nd, 2002)

The young lady's name is Maureen, she's been a fan at least since the 1998 ECSC, and she was one the 200+ brave souls who jumped into the atlantic.

I knew I had the pics some where on my hard drive but I didn't search them out. Wasn't the next line of his improv something like 'And she takes her shirt off!!!'
That had to be one of the coldest/windiest days on the beach. I could not believe these people were going to jump into the Atlantic, but it was for a good cause. I still get a kick out of telling people I saw BFJ on the beach in Virginia in February. Brrrr!!!

I don’t have much to add, the show has been covered pretty well. Although my right ear is still ringing, my mind continues to play back songs from the show. Trip, Gogo, Bob and Playboy seem to be dominating. This show was a nice treat that made up fort the Columbus show, IMO. (Columbus was my first, you know –long time listener, first time attendee) The impromptu / Timothy and tune-while-you-play were awesome. My neck is still hurtin, what a kick-ass show!! Can’t say enough!
Having had all my invitees to the show back out (wusses worried about work the next day), I was somewhat apprehensive about going solo, but there's no way I going to miss the show! I arrived just after the warm up band finished, and made my way to the front of the stage. There, I met a great group of DADA heads, Scott, Jeff, Laura, Joe, Kiki and some others who’s names I’ve lost. Of interesting note, while talking with Scott and crew before the show, I kept seeing this enthusiastic face just behind us. He would nod enthusiastically as he sorta monitored our conversation and as we talked about the band, songs and shows. I finally decided that he was band ‘security’, as he was kinda center stage, and seemed to be (understandably) mildly guarding his position. But as the show started and throughout the night, I couldn’t help but notice how totally jazzed he was to be there! I didn’t know it then, but turns out it was ‘Marty In The Middle’! I was so encouraged by his energy that I had to get him a beer! Apart from that, I had a great time with everyone up front!! Great to meet you all, sorry if I’ve forgotten your names. Laura – nice to put a face with your emails. (You helped me get a BFJ CD back from the old ‘dadadudes’ Yahoo group! Seems like a year ago?lol -as if you remember) You tireless efforts are appreciated by us all. I hope I at least got you a beer, you deserve so much more. Scott and the crew from Cincy(?) I had a blast jammin’ and getting to know ya!
Not sure about the Bowling Green or Columbus shows coming up. I’d like to make one of them. But, I find the older I get, the longer it takes to get recovered. Fortunately, this ‘recovery’ issue seems to be limited to alcohol and work early the next morning
Again, great show!! And nice to meet so many of you!!
Dave

Joie in the middle with his trademark art.
Phil on the bottom who said, "You got the list!"

You see this cat Marty is a bad mother - SHUT YOUR MOUTH! - but I'm talkin' 'bout Marty - then we can dig it!
And your thread, part 2, has been restored to it's glory - ie, the link works again.
I LOVE the name "9 drink minimum" for a band, the idea is hilarious, brilliant! Wish I'd thought of it.
