...finally almost functional enough to type up some thoughts on last night's show...

Note to self (and others): taking a day off from work to sleep in after a late night show sounds good in theory... but with kids in the house it's rather pointless, because you WILL be woken up at the earliest possible hour and not be able to go back to sleep. I should have just gone to work... I am definitely going to need to take a nap this afternoon if I'm going to stay awake for tonight's show in Providence.

OK, tangent over. On to the show...

Overall, as solid as always. I don't have a set list, but to my memory it went something like this (pretty much the standard set list):

dim
playboy in outerspace
surround
a trip with my dad
feet to the sun
here today, gone tomorrow
sick in santorini
heaven and nowhere
ask the dust
feel me don't you (major audience participation on this one)

Somewhere in here, they played one of the new songs (it's all mine). I absolutely loved it. Mike was backstage resting up for a few minutes while Joie and Phil played the majority of the song. I thought it sounded spectacular even with just bass and drums. At the very end, Mike came back and added some guitar to finish it off. Again, awesome song.

I tried requesting "steven", but no go. There was a break in the action at one point, and everybody there just started yelling requests. Joie said "don't believe everything you read on our web site". I just had to laugh at that, too funny.

They also played "scum", which I'm pretty sure is the first (and probably last) time they will do so on this tour. They said something about dedicating the next song to Rush, and I yelled out "SCUM"... and Mike said "ah, someone guessed it". heheh. They played this because of the controversy over Rush Limbaugh's recent comments about Donovan McNabb...

Another different one they played was "mary sunshine rain". When he strapped on his open-tuned guitar, Mike introduced the next song and said something like "we're gonna try something we haven't done here since '96". Naturally, I yelled out "MARY SUNSHINE RAIN". When then immediately started playing it, the woman standing behind me thought I was either crazy or psychic. She said something funny to me, but now I've forgotten what it was. Anyways... sorry I'm getting off-track here... I'm not at work, so I've got time to ramble on all I want... :)

Moving on... more songs they played:

posters (during the drum solo, Phil added a short snippet from "the end" by the beatles)
moon
dizz knee land

Then a really short break, and they came back with:

bob the drummer
baby really loves me
california dreamin'
dorina

I think that's all of the songs they played, but not necessarily in that exact order. I may have missed one, but I don't think so.

GURLEY UPDATE: updated edited... forecast: sunny skies, 80% chance of mary sunshine rain.

As for the venue, it is definitely a nice little place to see a band. Unfortunately, it seemed like the attendance was maybe about half the number that came to see them at the same place about a month or so ago (which looked like a sellout to me). It can't help any having a show so late on a Thursday night.

Based on previous experience and the bonus that today is a Friday, I'm expecting a super-packed crowd at the Met Cafe tonight. At least, I hope it will be. dada have always had amazing turnouts for every RI show I've been to. I'm hoping that remains true, even with the lack of promotion for this current tour. And with that, I'm going to attempt to possibly get some real rest before the show tonight, and I shall report again tomorrow.

Farewell, fellow dada freaks

Oh and PS - still no new CD's other than "Euphoria", which I FINALLY got a hold of. All of the information for it (including lyrics) is now up on my site, though I won't have the cover scans up 'till I get back to work on Tuesday.

There really isn't much to say about the show that hasn't already been said. Except when I got there an hour before the show, Joie was walking out the front door while Europe's 'The Final Countdown' was playing. Oh yeah, he was feeling it. So of course, during the encore I shouted it out as a request. Surprisingly, it was not played. Such is life.

Not much else, I bought the orange floppy hat, it rocks. Because it's floppy. And on a side note, if you listen closely to the Mega Show boot, track 12, 7 seconds in, you'll hear some loser shouting freebird. Oh yeah, that's me.

It's all good, baby...
