WOW! Phil Leavitt is a TORNADO! I was impressed with all the guys, but especially with Phil. He kept a driving pace the whole night, seldom stopped, and never slipped. Amazing!
The Saint was packed. According to a sign on the door, the show was sold out, and it looked it. We arrived very early (at the same time as the bus), about 3 hours before showtime. So we went and got dinner at a diner & came back a half hour before the doors opened. Very glad we did. Saw Matt from Philly, and his brother, and said howdy. Also met BigB and his daughter, who we talked to while waiting in line. Very nice folks! Really enjoyed meeting you both! Alana - it really makes me glad to see people your age digging dada.
Staked out my spot and stayed put. It was worth it to be able to see everyone and be so close, though the sound would’ve been better farther back because of the speaker set up. I couldn’t understand most of what was said between songs because the vocal speakers were over my head, and slightly behind me. But the bass, drums & guitar were right there hitting me in the chest.
The setlist was very much like the previous shows, with It’s All Mine and Stephen in there too. No request section. But I did get one wish in that they played California Dreamin’ (& Mary Sunshine Rain too!).
Joie took a walk out into the crowd during one solo, and held the hand of a young lady (Chamomile’s sister) in his right hand while he played for a while. He was flinging his head & hair around like a wild man and did a lot of soloing for most of the night. And he sang his ass off.
Mike was making eye contact with as many people as he could, and seemed to really enjoy the singing along in Feel Me. (In fact, it was a big sing along for much of the night.) It was great to be close enough to see what he was playing and how. And I got a kick out the fact that he pointed at me for “the drugs” during Here Today. I was wearing a hemp tie dye & my curly hair was extremely wild from a windy visit to the beach earlier in the day, plus I roll my own cigarettes (people always think they are joints) - so I guess I looked it!
Phil, like I said, was wild. I’m glad I was standing where I could see him this time. He is certainly not Bob – as he recommended to Donna Ashford – he POUNDs THE SKINS! I’m one of those folks who doesn’t have enough mind/body coordination even to dance and so it amazes me to see someone who can use their whole body with such force, feel and control. Phil is stunning!
After the show, it sounded like Joie’s music they played in the bar, but that CD wasn’t available for sale yet. Either was the live one or the new studio one. I think Nic said tuesday (10/7) I eyeballed Euphoria, and longed to take it home. But didn’t because I’ve already got 2 copies coming to me in the mail. I had pretty much given up on finding Sam by that time, but fortunately she found me – and she had saved magnets (courtesy of the amazing LauraK) for both Rich & I. She is such a sweet person - I really liked her. She even got a poster and had everyone from the boards sign it for the boys.
Nancy in VA Beach is exactly right – Phil is such a sweetie! Despite a lot of technical difficulty, I did score the picture with him that I was after. Both of my cameras broke & would not advance the film...Rich (the electronic tech) worked on the instamatic at the bar to no avail. (Wes you’ll love this) I had all but given up, but finally said a prayer asking for just one picture – and the camera fired up! And Phil was such a sweetie to oblige me right there on the spot before the camera crapped out again. I didn’t hang for autographs – I already had my turn at New Hope.
It was really nice to meet the folks from the boards – truly an awesome bunch of people! I didn’t see Lance, but I did get to see Perk again (always a pleasure) and met Chamomile too. (I’m really glad that she got pictures of Joie with her sister – I’ll bet she’s on cloud 9!)
Marty – no pick but that’s ok. I have a pencil & a magnet from Sam, and a big smile from dada. I did get a chance to give Mike the present I made for him at the end of the show. Hope it fits and he likes it, but if not, that’s ok too. It gave me pleasure to make it and to give something back.
Rich had a great time! He liked dada already, but I think now he loves them too. He was so impressed with the whole band. And being guitar player too, he was astounded at Mike. We rocked the Norva all the way up, and Butterfly Jones on the way home. We are 2 very happy, deaf people right now!
