dada Preview

Hundreds of bands have soared to rarely seen heights only to be rebuffed just as quickly, but few did quite as exceptionally as dada. Nearly unavoidable when “Dizz Knee Land” hit the airwaves in the early ’90s, they found the industry and public less receptive to their ensuing ideas. Read the rest of this entry »

Rock’s dada back on road after break

In sports, taking a timeout is a strategic move to rethink the way things are going and formulate a game plan in order to proceed.

It can work the same way in life: Sometimes a pause from a job or a relationship is the only way to improve things.

But in the pop music business, taking a time out can prove to be deadly.

If you’re not making a record, touring, somehow staying in the news and trying to keep ahead of the game, people forget you quickly and move on to the next band with the buzz. Here today, gone tomorrow. Read the rest of this entry »

Lost and Found Dada Does Two Nights in Asbury

The band dada is living a lesson for all bands: Dropped by MCA, the Los Angeles-based musicians fought the label to gain control of the unreleased tracks they recorded. Then, they put out their own darned album. And, as the San Jose Mercury News pointed out, Wilco did the same thing, after getting dumped by Warner Bros. So, keep at it, dada. Dada to play free Dewey show Wednesday, July 14

Los Angeles trio Dada may have taken six years between its last studio project and new release “How To Be Found,” but it hasn’t missed a beat when it comes to touring.

“We’re on the road about half our lives right now,” says guitarist and singer Michael Gurley. “The last 12 months we’ve been on the road about six months, and it’s going to pretty much continue that way.” Read the rest of this entry »

dada brings its eclectic approach to Rockin’ on the Landing

As you may know, Fair St. Louis is making an effort to attract contemporary rock fans on July 4, with Saliva and the Wallflowers playing on the main stage. But that approach is nothing new at Laclede’s Landing. This year, the Bud Light Rockin’ on the Landing lineup features an array of local and national acts performing on four stages. Local acts will be featured at the President Casino, Embassy Suites and Hampton Inn-Gateway Arch Stages, and national acts will headline at the Bud Light Main Stage at Second Street and Lucas Avenue. How To Be Found

L.A.-based dada – which saw a modicum of success in the ’90s before falling off the back of the major-label bandwagon – is a throwback to a time before multiple formats and myriad subgenres, when a group of long-haired musicians was simply a “rock band,” period. Read the rest of this entry »

dada, “How To Be Found,” (Blue Cave)
Release Date: March 2, 2004

“If you’ve never heard of dada — an L.A. trio whose first album, Puzzle, sold half a million copies in the early 1990s — imagine crossing the Police’s finicky jazz chops with the poppy angst of a fellow SoCal band like Sugar Ray. After a six-year hiatus, dada returns with its fifth album, and if you like angular twists on pop formulas, you’ll want to hunt down this self-released disc. The vocal interplay between guitarist Michael Gurley and bassist Joie Calio is rich — check out the Nirvana-esque title track and the harmony-drenched “Blue Girl.” Meanwhile, Gurley plays with eloquence in “Crumble” and the Hendrix-style riffing of “Reason”.

The band dada loves to perform at San Juan Capistrano’s Coach House

When Joie Calio and Michael Gurley took the stage for the first time together, opening for Mary’s Danish at the Coach House in 1991, little did they know what the future held for dada.

The band – completed several months later with the addition of drummer Phil Leavitt, and which has never boasted any other lineup – has developed one of rock’s most passionate followings. Read the rest of this entry »
